Fusion and Fonts from Bitstream X-Winds benefits from accelerated time-to-market by utilizing Font Fusion and LSI Logic's software development platform Cambridge, MA, U.S.A., and CHU-BEI CITY, TAIWAN — January 29, 2002 — Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ: BITS) and X-Winds Technology Inc. announced today that X-Winds has licensed Font Fusion (Bitstream's premier font rasterizing engine) and complementary fonts to enhance its line of set-top box products. X-Winds selected the Font Fusion library for its ability to accelerate the design process and render high-quality characters on screen. "Building Bitstream's font technology into our product line will increase the legibility and readability of on-screen text in digital set-top boxes," said Ben Ting, Sales Specialist, X-Winds Technology, Inc. "We selected Bitstream because of the company's reputation for creating superior font technology. Bitstream's Font Fusion provides the best solution for our customers, who demand high quality in their products." X-Winds is utilizing both the LSI Logic library version of Font Fusion and LSI Logic's set-top box software development platform (SDP2005) to develop interactive set-top boxes. Together, Bitstream's solution and the LSI Logic SDP2005 can display high-quality fonts while supporting multiple languages and preserving system memory. This combination of products enables set-top box developers like X-Winds to reduce system costs and speed time-to-market. About Font Fusion Available as an SDK (Software Developers' Kit), Font Fusion is able to rasterize 8 different font formats: TrueType®, Type 1, CFF/Type2, T2K® Latin, T2K Asian, TrueDoc® PFR (portable font resource), Bitstream Speedo®, and Font Fusion stroke (FFS) format, as well as embedded bitmaps. Developers can also license a number of different suites of fonts, including delta-hinted screen fonts and the TV Font Pack. Font Fusion is small and fast. Most developers can compile the source code in 32-105 KB, depending on options. It generates more than 16,000 characters per second, using the Arial® font at 25 lines per em on a 233MHz Pentium® II processor, cache turned off. Font Fusion performs well in memory- and performance-constrained environments. For example, a complete traditional Chinese TrueType font with over 13,000 characters can occupy as much as 8 MB.
