Bitstream Iowan Old Style, originally published in 1991, is John Downer's debut text family. Classified as a Venetian old style, Iowan Old Style is modeled after earlier, 20th century American revivals of Italian Renaissance types cut by Nicolas Jenson and Francesco Griffo, but features a larger x-height, tighter letterfit and reproportioned capitals. It was also inspired by classical inscriptional lettering as well as sign painting seen in certain regions of eastern Iowa, Downer's current stomping ground.

Expert font sets, including small caps, extensions and alternates, as well as old style figure fonts, were added in 2000.

The latest addition, Iowan Old Style Titling, was designed in 2001 by John Downer and added to the family in 2002. The cap-only character set, which includes additional ornaments and fleurons, broadens the appeal and functionality of the typeface family.

The Iowan Old Style family was designed for and is well suited for extended use in book text setting.

The following typefaces are featured on Iowan Old Style: The Complete Family.

  • Iowan Old Style Titling
  • Iowan Old Style Roman, Italic, h3, and h3 Italic
  • Iowan Old Style Black and Black Italic
  • Iowan Old Style Roman, Italic, h3, and h3 Italic Old Style Figures
