Old Style expert sets, which are offered in a separate release).

are excited about this, the first of many annual NFC collections."
About the Designers
Brian Bonislawsky is a graduate from Rhode
Island School of Design. Before graduating with a BFA & Certificate
in Illustration, he had studied hand cut lettering, dimensional
letter construction, working with hot type, and type on the computer.
In the years since his graduation, Bonislawsky has established Astigmatic
One Eye Foundry ( www.astigmatic.com), an online typeface and graphic
design business. Cavalero , Stingwire and Tannarin represent an
ever-growing collection of Bonislawsky type designs, with many more
to come.
Nick Curtis is a graphic designer with
over thirty years of experience in print, A/V, broadcast television
and the Web. He has been passionately interested in typography ever
since he discovered a type specimen book in his early teens. A prolific
type designer, Picayune Intelligence is Mr. Curtis' first release
with Bitstream. A slab serif design with an Art Deco motif, the
typeface is named after a fictitious newspaper in a popular 60's
cartoon show.
Tony Fahy , born in Ireland, is a type
designer and typographer living and working in Carrigallen, Co Leitrim.
His first type creation was a Gaelic typeface called "Pádraig,"
which won a Chartpak competition. Artane , Fahy's first typeface
for Bitstream, has a specific philosophy at the core of its creation.
He decided he would try to create a Roman sans that would have the
elegance of a serif italic such as Stempel Garamond, Bembo, or Baskerville.
Artane is the result!
Charles Gibbons ' and Mary Trafton's
Full Moon Suite is an open-ended, collaborative design project.
All of the typefaces under this banner will be called after "folk"
names for full moons. The first two, FM Rustling Branches Moon and
FM Falling Leaves Moon, are casual lettering styles developed by
Ms. Trafton and brought to typographic life by Mr. Gibbons. Aphasia
, an Art Deco inspired typeface designed by Mr. Gibbons, is also
included on NFC: Volume 1.
Nicolai Gogoll was born in Hamburg, Germany
and began to study design in 1991 at the Fachhochschule Hamburg.
In 1999, Mr. Gogoll was awarded the Kurt Christians Award for his
successful revival of Arno Drescher's Super Grotesk. Drescher Grotesk
, named in honor of the designer, is a sturdy German geometric design,
consisting of seven roman weights, including a version designed
for use at small point sizes. Three weights are offered with this
release, Semi-h3, h3 and Small Sizes.
Holly Goldsmith's Raven , with its Gothic
feel, is the perfect typeface to gain that little bit of an edge.
Both Raven and its h3er mate, Raven Evermore, work beautifully in
text and display sizes. Extra hidden characters, four ravens that
augment its Poe-like nature, are available in complementary companion
fonts, Raven Extra and Raven Evermore Extra. Ms. Goldsmith's other
Bitstream releases include Hank, Liorah, Melanie, Missy and Ryan.
Richard Hubbard is a 1993 BFA graduate
from Pratt Institute with a concentration in computer illustration
and graphic design. He began designing type in 1997. Recently, Mr.
Hubbard began his own on-line design business, Enrich Design, offering
typefaces for sale, as well as graphic and Web design services (
www.enrichdesign.com). Based on Hubbard's own hand printing, Richfont
Medium is an extremely casual design, actually light in weight and
best used at larger display point sizes.
Eduardo Manso continues his assault on
typeface design with this release of Rina and Rina Linea . Based
on a serif design, Mr. Manso destroys convention by distressing
the character shapes. The result is a cutting edge design. He pushes
the envelope even further by then creating an outline version. Manso's
other Bitstream release, Eroxion , is a popular seller and equally
unconventional.
Harry Pears collaborated with Margaret
Layson to adapt the script of the Lindisfarne Gospels for reading
in a contemporary context, hence the name " Lindisfarne Nova ."
Born in the town of Quirindi, Australia, typographer Harry Pears
moved to Sydney and began a career in the printing industry as a
camera operator making color separations. Along the way, Mr. Pears
developed an interest in typography and is now principal owner of
Typeface Research Pty. Ltd. of Lake Cathie, Australia. Calligrapher
Margaret Layson is particularly interested in the history of writing
and the changes in scripts and decoration in manuscripts from Roman
times to the present day. Ms. Layson's interest in type comes from
her love of drawn and carved letterforms used in a calligraphic
context.
Kate Peters was born in Southern California.
A former punk rock photographer, model, and photo assistant, Ms.
Peters began designing type in 1998. When not making fonts, she
makes a living as a product stylist. She is founder and owner of
Burghal Design, an online type foundry ( www.burghal.com). Many
of Ms. Peters' typeface designs stretch the boundaries of typical
design. SissyBoy is no exception.
