Bitstream announced the New Font Collection (NFC) program in August
of 2000. The current Bitstream Typeface Library has been a mainstay
of the graphic design community for 20 years. Bitstream felt the
time had come to begin a new collection of typefaces, not only to
add fonts to the library but, more importantly, to seek out designs
from both new and established designers. To that end, Bitstream
established the New Font Collection program.
The following typefaces are featured in the Spring 2002 release:
- Drescher Grotesk Light, Book, Roman, and Demi
by Nicolai Gogoll
- FM Black Cherry Moon , Alternate, Ligature,
and Doubles by Charles Gibbons & Mary Trafton
- Steppin' Out by Nick Curtis
"So far, the NFC has released 55 new typefaces from international
designers," said Jim Lyles, Director of Typographic Development
at Bitstream and designer of a variety of fonts, including the Prima
Sans font family. "It's a great pleasure, with this new release,
to extend families of fonts we have already established. Nicolai
Gogoll has added four new fonts to his Drescher Grotesk family,
completing his award-winning revival of Arno Drescher's Super Grotesk.
Charles Gibbons & Mary Trafton have added four new faces to
their Full Moon Suite, a repertoire of casual, yet expressive designs.
Nick Curtis complements his previously released Picayune IntelligenceT
with the equally quirky and lively Steppin' Out typeface. We continue
to receive inspired designs and look forward to receiving new submissions
for this very successful program."
About the Designers
Nick Curtis is a graphic designer with
over thirty years of experience in print, A/V, broadcast television
and the Web. He has been passionately interested in typography ever
since he discovered a type specimen book in his early teens. A prolific
type designer, Steppin' Out is Mr. Curtis' second release with Bitstream.
A stylish, Deco-inspired typeface, Steppin' Out is packed full of
quirky nuances and lively design.
Charles Gibbons and Mary Trafton's Full
Moon Suite is an open-ended, collaborative design project. All of
the typefaces under this banner will be called after "folk" names
for full moons. FM Black Cherry Moon, Alternate, Ligature, and Doubles
are the latest editions. The first two that Bitstream previously
released, FM Rustling Branches Moon and FM Falling Leaves Moon,
are casual lettering styles developed by Ms. Trafton and brought
to typographic life by Mr. Gibbons. Bitstream has also previously
published Aphasia, another typeface designed by Mr. Gibbons.
Nicolai Gogoll was born in Hamburg, Germany,
and began to study design in 1991 at the Fachhochschule Hamburg.
In 1999, Mr. Gogoll was awarded the Kurt Christians Award for his
successful revival of Arno Drescher's Super Grotesk. Drescher Grotesk,
named in honor of the designer, is a sturdy German geometric design,
consisting of seven roman weights, including a version designed
for use at small point sizes. Four weights are offered with this
release: Light, Book, Roman, and Demi. Bitstream previously released
Semi-h3, h3, and Small Sizes.
