WebEx Communications Relicenses
Bitstream Font Technology WebEx extends
its agreement for Font Fusion and TrueDoc
Cambridge, MA June 03, 2002 Bitstream
Inc. (NASDAQ:
BITS) announced today that WebEx Communications , the global
leader in Web infrastructure for business communications, has renewed
its license for Font Fusion , Bitstream's premier font rendering
engine, and the TrueDoc recorder, Bitstream's solution for providing
portable fonts in applications and over the Internet. This new agreement
extends WebEx's ability to provide the most complete and flexible
real-time communications services to its customers and partners,
including rendering the fonts that users want during Web meetings
and presentations.
WebEx provides real-time, interactive multimedia communications
services to corporations. These services let users conduct meetings
and share software applications, documents, presentations, streaming
video and other rich media through a standard Web browser. WebEx's
services are delivered using its globally distributed network and
scalable platform, ensuring predictability, reliability and security.
WebEx's powerful features make it possible to instantly increase
the efficiency and effectiveness of a wide range of activities including
sales, marketing, training, and support.
"In this day and age, collaboration is very important. People often
have to work on a project together, but from remote locations. WebEx
has been very successful in this regard," said Anna Chagnon, President
of Bitstream. "By integrating our Font Fusion and TrueDoc products,
WebEx enables everyone participating in WebEx meetings to dynamically
display the correct text live, in real time, during interactive
Web meetings. Because our font rendering engines are fast, customers
can immediately see the correct text rendered in the correct font
in their WebEx session. It's very gratifying to know that a well-known
communications company like WebEx continues to use our technology
in its services."
"Bitstream continues to be a leader and innovator in font technologies,"
said K.V. Rao, Director of Technology at WebEx Communications. "The
ability to deliver fast and accurate text rendering across a range
of devices is one of the powerful communications capabilities of
the WebEx Interactive Network."
About
Font Fusion
Font Fusion provides developers with full font fidelity and high-quality
typographic output at any resolution on any device, while maintaining
the integrity of the original character shapes. Font Fusion is small
and fast. Most developers can compile the source code in 32-105
KB, depending on options. It generates more than 16,000 characters
per second, using the Arial font at 25 lines per em on a 233MHz
Pentium II processor, cache turned off.
Font Fusion performs well in memory- and performance-constrained
environments. For example, a complete traditional Chinese TrueType
font with over 13,000 characters can occupy as much as 8MB. With
Font Fusion, the same characters occupy less than 0.5MB, representing
considerable savings in memory and disk space costs.
Font Fusion is designed for operating systems, software applications,
Web applications, low-resolution screen devices, multimedia servers,
high-definition television screens (HDTVs), set-top boxes, continuous
tone printers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other embedded
systems and information and wireless appliances.
TrueDoc
Bitstream's TrueDoc technology was the precursor to Font Fusion.
It solves font fidelity problems for many digital communications
markets, delivering a quick and compact font solution while maintaining
the highest standards in typographic quality. TrueDoc is completely
independent of platform, operating system, application, resolution,
and device.
The Bitstream PFR (portable font resource) was the product of TrueDoc
development. Many independent, international organizations have
adopted the PFR font format as their de facto, standard font format,
including the following:
- DAVIC (Digital Audio Visual Council), which
sets multimedia standards for international broadcasting
- DVB ( Digital Video Broadcasting), a Swiss-based
industry organization representing one standard for digital TV,
which has been adopted extensively in Europe
- DTG (Digital TV Group), which coordinates standards
for Digital TV broadcasting in the United Kingdom
- MHP (Multimedia Home Platform), which many
European set-top box and digital TV manufacturers are using as
their standard development platform
- ISO/IEC 16500-6:1999 International Organization
for Standardization / International Electrotechnical Commission),
which together form the specialized system for worldwide standardization.
After DAVIC completed their work, DAVIC was disbanded. The DAVIC
specification was then adopted as a standard by ISO. The ISO document
includes an appendix on coding of outline fonts in PFR format
for digital audio-visual systems.
- OCAP (OpenCable Application Platform), which
supports the DVB-MHP standard, including support for PFRs. The
OpenCable initiative is managed by the Advanced Platforms and
Services group at CableLabs.
