Mpower 4.0 Raises the Bar for Personalization and Customization Composition Software
Cambridge, MA — July 16, 2003 — Pageflex (NASDAQ: BITS),a leader in Web-top publishing, a pioneer and leader of Web-top publishing, announces the general release of MpowerTversion 4.0, offering support for variable-length documents. A robust new feature set makes it possible for direct marketers, printers, advertising agencies, and corporate marketing departments to produce in a single project a set of professionally designed brochures, product briefs, proposals, travel itineraries, or business stationery items of flexible length. And the fourth-generation Mpower technology is easy to integrate in workflows with the new breed of digital color printers, like the iGen3 from Xerox.

Mpower 4.0 provides all functions needed to produce variable-length customized documents while automatically paginating each document and maintaining design and brand integrity. Features new in the release include master pages, automatic page insertion based on overflow, variable-page insertion based on user-defined values, dynamic filler page insertion for signature maintenance, automatic page and section numbering, header and footer controls, and automatic table of contents generation. Also supported is fully paginated "stitching in" of multi-page PDF files and Pageflex documents.

"Pageflex has long been an industry leader in page composition technology and flexible variable-data publishing solutions," said David Frenkel, Pageflex General Manager. "Variable-length customized publishing is the next level of flexibility in Web-to-print workflows with the new digital color printers, helping us further our mission of simplifying the production of professional-looking business documents by non-design professionals."

One-to-one, rich-media marketing solutions provider National Printing and Packaging welcomes variable-length document support into its Mpower workflow. Information Technology Manager Tom Middleton tells us, "We are very excited about upgrading to Mpower 4.0. Variable-length document support will relieve the need for multiple templates for some of our clients. In addition, we found the upgraded PDF library to be significantly improved and are currently converting all our projects."

Four51, entrepreneurs in print supply chain management, use Mpower as the composition engine in an ASP operation that offers streamlined print purchasing from any desktop in a secure, personalized online environment. "Four51 has tens of thousands of Pageflex template products on our e-commerce network, from thousands of customer companies, " explains Chief Technology Officer John Wangaard. "We cannot afford the downtime and professional service hours that might be necessary should an upgrade not perform smoothly. From the beta evaluation process with Mpower 4.0, and our past experience through several upgrades, we were confident enough in Pageflex technology to move the beta product into our production environment. Only one of our existing templates produced an error, and that has subsequently been fixed in the general release. I call that level of performance outstanding!"

Mpower 4.0 introduces Pageflex Studio, an integrated project and template authoring application that streamlines publishing projects by centralizing layout and data tools in a unified interface. Studio combines the capabilities of Pageflex Designer and Pageflex Producer to let users prepare in one application the projects to drive softcopy and print output through Mpower and MpowerT servers. Concurrent with the release of Mpower 4.0 is the release of Mpower 2.0.1, which brings variable-length features to the Mpower world as well, making it possible for end-users to edit Pageflex templates online in an ordinary Web browser.

Mpower 4.0 ships with a native PDF driver based on the PDF Library 5.0 from Adobe, with complete support for OpenType PostScript fonts, Asian and Eastern European character sets, and CMYK bitmaps. Also included are a native EPS output driver, Web-to-print API enhancements, and a set of Web-based samples that self-install for immediate use. A complete list of features new in Mpower 4.0, an overview brochure, and a technical brochure are available on the Pageflex Web site at www.pageflexinc.com.

Pageflex
Pageflex ( www.pageflexinc.com) is the pioneer of a new direction in composition software: Web-top publishing. Moving beyond desktop publishing, our Web-top publishing software helps novice users create high-quality printed products using intelligent, flexible templates, without installing or learning any new software. Pageflex templates are intelligent and flexible because professional designers can set rules to define which elements can change, how much they can change, and who can change them. Our products maintain corporate identity and design integrity while enabling sophisticated customization of documents. Pageflex also leads the field in variable-data composition software for both enterprise and desktop.

Pageflex software is used for a wide variety of applications, including on-demand marketing materials, stationery and business cards, advertising, catalogs, and personalized digital printing. Pageflex products are distributed through original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), value-added resellers (VARs), applications service providers (ASPs), and system integrators (SIs). The Pageflex worldwide customer base includes manufacturers, service providers, advertising agencies, commercial printers, graphic design houses and ASPs. Users of Pageflex products include Xerox, IBM, Ford, EFI, Coldwell Banker, Wunderman, Valassis, Consolidated Graphics, Newgen Results, USA Mail-Well, httprint, Moore Wallace, and Spire. Pageflex was established in 1999 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bitstream Inc. ( NASDAQ: BITS, www.bitstream.com).

What makes Pageflex software different from all other composition systems?

Desktop publishing requires users to install expensive software and master superior design techniques. With Web-top publishing, even beginners can turn out high-quality printed products, without installing or learning any sofware, by using Pageflex intelligent and flexible templates. Unlike ordinary templates, these have sophisticated built- in rules that offer users a wide range options to change graphics and text while preventing them from making design blunders. Executives and designers can relax, knowing that a remote branch can generate local content without corrupting the corporate brand and identity.
