Brian Sooy
- Cruz Cantera Light, Medium, and h3 by Ray Cruz
- Melina Plain and Melina Fancy by Nick Curtis
- Modakshar by Archana Lothe
"Bitstream's international design family continues
to grow. Archana Lothe is the first designer from India to be published
by the New Font Collection," said Jim Lyles, Director of Typographic
Development at Bitstream. "In addition to Mrs. Lothe, we are excited
to add two new designers to our NFC family - Ray Cruz and Brian
Sooy - as well as old hand Nick Curtis. Besides Archana Lothe"s
elegant Modakshar, this release also includes Cruz Cantera, a crisp
and stylish yet informal sans serif typeface created by NYC type
designer Ray Cruz. Also included is Brian Sooy's Arkeo typeface
family. Given very few design elements to work with, Brian has designed
a bitmap font that is handsome and very readable. In addition, Nick
Curtis' Melina Plain and Melina Fancy are characterized by graceful
lines, strong contrast, and nostalgic overtones. The NFC continues
to thrive on the inspired works of these veteran designers."
About the Designers
"Learn by Doing" is Ray Cruz's philosophy.
He emphasizes this to lettering students, and practices it in his
career. His expertise in custom lettering and typographic design
has brought in freelance work from ad agencies, publishers, and
firms specializing in package design and corporate identity and
has netted him over 30 art achievement awards. The Cruz Cantera
family is the first of several NFC releases.
Nick Curtis
is a graphic designer with over thirty years of experience in print,
A/V, broadcast television and the Web. He has been passionately
interested in typography ever since he discovered a type specimen
book in his early teens. A prolific type designer, Melina Plain
and Fancy are Mr. Curtis' third releases with Bitstream. These typefaces
are patterned after two members of a type family named Greco, released
by Fundición Richard Gans of Madrid, Spain, in the 1920s.
Melina Plain is a refined version of Greco h3, and Melina Fancy
is based on Greco Adornado, with the notable addition of a lowercase,
which was not a part of the original design.
Archana Lothe
has always had a love for calligraphy and type, and she believes
that this was inherited from her forefathers. In the 19th century,
Archana"s ancestors owned and operated a type foundry. Blessed with
outstanding handwriting skills, her forefathers produced samples
of carefully handwritten scripts, which they would convert to font
formats suitable for printing purposes. Archana was inspired to
create a Latin based typeface based on those traditional handwritten
scripts. The result, Modakshar, is dedicated to the memory of her
artisan forefathers. This is Archana"s first Latin typeface design.
Brian Sooy
is the principal designer for Altered Ego Fonts, www.aefonts.com
(formerly known as Sooy Type Foundry, or STF), offering custom typeface
design for commissions and licensing. Brian is also the Creative
Director of Brian Sooy & Co., www.briansooyco.com , a marketing
design firm that specializes in converging print and interactive
media. Located in Elyria, Ohio, he and his staff of four work with
a diverse list of clients. Arkeo Regular, Condensed, and Extended
are Mr. Sooy"s first typeface family published with Bitstream.

of typefaces, not only to add fonts to the library but, more importantly,
to seek out designs from both new and established designers. To
that end, Bitstream established the New Font Collection program.
