Bitstream Licenses Font Fusion
to PubliTronic
Worldwide provider of multimedia broadcasting
solutions licenses Bitstream's premier font rendering engine
Apeldoorn,
THE NETHERLANDS and CAMBRIDGE, MA September 10, 2003
Bitstream Inc. ( NASDAQ:BITS ) and PubliTronic bv announced today
that PubliTronic has signed an agreement with Bitstream to license
Font Fusion , Bitstream's premier font rendering engine. PubliTronic
will use Bitstream technology in its high-end professional broadcast
server and graphics systems. PubliTronic
specializes in the development of systems for automated multimedia
broadcasts. More and more overlaps between broadcast, cable, satellite,
and Internet industries exist, and PubliTronic makes it possible
to use the same technology among them. PubliTronic will use Bitstream's
font rendering solution to generate characters on the fly for PubliTronic's
electronic program guides (EPGs); to render real-time text on business,
sports, and news channels; and to produce titles and related recording
information for interactive music channels, to name a few examples.
"For our newly released Indigo platform
we did an intensive assessment to find the highest-quality font
rendering engine on the market. After our initial assessment, Font
Fusion and FreeType were the main candidates. We implemented both
on our real-time DSP hardware and were positively surprised by the
ease of porting and the quality and speed of the Font Fusion renderer.
Of course FreeType is free, but the amount of development needed
to get it to the same quality level (including visual quality) made
it less interesting, and in the long term a less viable solution.
The broadcast market has always required the highest standard in
quality and reliability. The fast, well-written and systematic Font
Fusion engine gives us a future roadmap for the Indigo platform."
"PubliTronic joins the many worldwide leaders
in the broadcast market who have licensed a font rendering solution
from Bitstream," said Anna Chagnon, President of Bitstream. "For
live feeds and interactive broadcasts, it's imperative that clear,
legible text is generated quickly so customers can receive up-to-date
information. Our partners confirm that Font Fusion delivers the
highest-quality text at any resolution and on any device. We are
honored that PubliTronic has selected Font Fusion for its entire
product line."
About
Font Fusion
Font Fusion provides developers with full
font fidelity and high-quality typographic output at any resolution
on any device, while maintaining the integrity of the original character
shapes. Font Fusion is both small and fast. Most developers can
compile the source code in 32-105 KB, depending on options. It generates
more than 16,000 characters per second, using the Arial font at
25 lines per em on a 233MHz Pentium II processor, cache turned off.
Font Fusion is designed for operating systems,
software applications, Web applications, low-resolution screen devices,
multimedia servers, high-definition television screens (HDTVs),
set-top boxes, continuous tone printers, PDAs, and other embedded
systems and information and wireless appliances.
