SanDisk Ships SD Wi-Fi Connectivity
Cards to Major Retailers
SanDisk and Bitstream Also Announce Plan To Bundle Wireless Web Browser
with SanDisk SD Wi-Fi Cards
LAS VEGAS, NV October 21, 2003
SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) reported today that its new SanDisk
Connect SD Wi-Fi cards are now being sold at BestBuy.com, CompUSA
and other retail outlets. SanDisk and Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ:BITS)
also announced that SanDisk will include the trial version of ThunderHawk,
Bitstream's pioneering wireless Web browser, with each SanDisk Connect
SD Wi-Fi card. The announcements were made at the CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications
& Internet Association) trade show where SanDisk is demonstrating
products in booth 929 and Bitstream is demonstrating ThunderHawk in
booth 932. The ThunderHawk wireless
Web browser lets Pocket PC users view full HTML Web pages over the
wireless Internet. For easier viewing, the mobile browser displays
the complete text and images of any Web page horizontally in landscape
mode while maintaining full text legibility.
David Smurthwaite, a SanDisk retail product
marketing manager, said, "We are pleased with the demand for our
first SD communications card product - the Connect SD Wi-Fi card
- and we are pleased that major retailers are now selling the card.
We also think that this SanDisk SD Wi-Fi - ThunderHawk combination
is a perfect solution for business users, consumers and the many
students with PDAs on campuses with Wi-Fi access. More than 100
U.S. colleges and universities have Wi-Fi access today and a growing
number of high schools are also installing Wi-Fi hot spots to give
their students wireless connectivity to the Internet."
The SanDisk SD Wi-Fi card has a suggested
retail price of $129.95, and the ThunderHawk application will be
included on a 30-day trial basis.
Smurthwaite noted, "There are thousands
of hot spots where mobile consumers can access desired content and
information on a handheld computer. Pairing our Wi-Fi card with
a wireless Web browser gives consumers a cleaner, more complete
view of content on a small handheld screen. With standard handheld
browser software, many users only see a partial or altered view
of Web and content pages. But ThunderHawk resolves those problems.
We are pleased to introduce Bitstream's wireless Web browser to
our Wi-Fi SD card users."
Bitstream President Anna Chagnon said,
"The SanDisk SD Wi-Fi card will give mobile users wireless access
to the information they need, crucial for people on the go. This
partnership provides a perfect fit for our wireless Web browser.
The Wi-Fi access that SanDisk's new card provides allows customers
using ThunderHawk to browse the Web and work with Web-based E-mail
and applications wirelessly. We are pleased to partner with SanDisk,
the world's leading supplier of flash memory data storage products.
This is a win-win-win solution for Bitstream, SanDisk and, most
importantly, mobile customers."
