Platform
Digeo renews license of high-quality fonts
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. and KIRKLAND, Wash. — March 8, 2005 —
Bitstream Inc. ( NASDAQ:
BITS) announced a new agreement to supply its CCTV
Font Set to Digeo,
Inc. for use with its Moxi™ Media Center. Enabling the
display of FCC-standard closed captioning, the CCTV Font set helps
bring the Moxi Media Center experience to life for the more than
28 million Americans with hearing or vision impairments.
“The Moxi Media Center has dramatically changed and improved
the TV viewing experience,” said David Billmaier, Senior Director,
Product Marketing for Digeo, Inc. “Our agreement to license
Bitstream’s leading-edge font technologies ensures we’re
delivering that experience to as many consumers as possible.”
Utilizing leading technologies, such as the Bitstream CCTV Font
Set, the Moxi Media Center service provides easier access to existing
cable programming, more control over all forms of media, and exciting
new services. From On Demand, digital video recording (DVR), and
telephony services to a new range of entertainment options such
as Moxi Games, Moxi Photos and Moxi Jukebox, the Moxi Media Center
is transforming the way people watch television.
With more than 20 years of experience in font technology, Bitstream
provides the most advanced font solutions on the market today. The
crisp, legible typeface designs maximize the digital output on both
interlaced and progressive-scan TVs.
“As the leader in font standards for digital television,
Bitstream has been at the forefront of making text very legible
on TVs. This includes our work with the Royal National Institute
for the Blind and such leading digital TV standards’ organizations
as ATSC, DTG, DVB, MHP, and OCAP,” said Anna Chagnon, President
and Chief Executive Officer of Bitstream. “Manufacturers and
application developers need high-quality text to meet the FCC’s
requirements. We are pleased that our software has been chosen as
the closed-captioning solution for the innovative Moxi Media Center.”
About the CCTV Font Set
Bitstream’s CCTV
Font Set supports the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
requirements for closed captioning display on digital and analog
TVs. Bitstream carefully selected the fonts to be very readable
on the TV screen and implemented in all the FCC-required styles.
Bitstream created a high-quality CCTV Font Set that supports these
FCC requirements for the following font styles:
- Monospaced with serifs
- Proportionally spaced with serifs
- Monospaced without serifs
- Proportionally spaced without serifs
- Casual font type
- Cursive font type
- Small capitals
The CCTV Font Set includes the Tiresias Screenfont, developed specifically
for closed captioning by the Royal National Institute for the Blind
(RNIB). The Tiresias Screenfont is the standard font endorsed by
the DTG (Digital Terrestrial Group) and by the DVB (Digital Video
Broadcasting) organization for the MHP (Multimedia Home Platform).
Closed captioning involves displaying the “audio” portion
of a TV broadcast as text, which is superimposed over the video
portion. Most importantly, it allows viewers who are hearing impaired
to access TV broadcasts. To display closed-captioned text, the viewers
must have a set-top box decoder or a TV receiver that includes this
decoding capability. The FCC has updated its closed captioning requirements
for digital TVs and as of July 1, 2002, manufacturers must include
FCC-mandated decoder circuitry for closed captioning in their digital
TV devices.
