"These additions to the Bitstream New Font Collection include
new fonts from veteran NFC designers and the debut font of an Italian
illustrator and Web designer," explains Jim Lyles, Director of Typographic
Development at Bitstream. "This release offers Lorenzo Lalatta's
very first typeface, Orchestra BT, a whimsical melding of Latin
letterforms with the shapes of musical instruments and musicians
that shows his roots in comic illustration to good advantage. We
are pleased to welcome another new contributor as well, established
font designer and calligrapher Rob Leuschke of St Charles, Missouri.
Rob's typeface Ambiance is an elegant calligraphic design that includes
capital and lowercase swash letters. Ambiance is the first font
Bitstream has released in the OpenType format. Rounding out this
release are the charming Indoo typeface family from French font
designer Julien Janiszewski, inspired by shop signage in the Indian
neighborhoods of Paris, and two new additions to the Lindisfarne
Nova family, Lindisfarne Nova Incised and Lindisfarne Runes, by
Australians Harry Pears and Margaret Layson of Typeface Research
Pty. Ltd. The NFC continues to thrive on the inspired works of these
and other veteran designers and to seek new designers from across
the globe."
About the Designers
Julien Janiszewski lives in Paris. He received a bachelor's degree
in graphic design from Besançon and later graduated from
the renowned type workshop at the École Estienne in Paris.
After a brief stint working for a graphic design company, Julien
now works as a freelance type and art director. He is also skilled
as a calligrapher, typographer, animator, and Web designer.
Julien has an extensive library of type designs, which can be viewed
at http://www.la-laiterie.com. Bitstream also published his Ambule
font family, and he has had several fonts published by T-26 as well.
Lorenzo LaLatta is a graphic artist, illustrator, and Web designer
who lives and works in Parma, Italy. He discovered his love and
talent for the illustrative arts at the early age of six, teaching
himself to draw by copying comic strips. Throughout high school
at the Liceo Scientifico in Parma and university at the European
Institute of Design in Milan, he polished his skills. He was particularly
inspired by the "ligne claire," or clear line, style in the work
of Belgian comic artist Hergé (Georges Remi), whose beloved
character Tintin is commemorated on a new European coin.
Lorenzo does not profess to be a type designer – his only
font to date is Orchestra BT. Although not a typeface in the strictest
sense, Orchestra has a clear source in Latin letterforms wedded
to Lorenzo's "ligne claire" roots. You can view samples of his illustrations
and designs at www.lalatta.it.
A former lettering artist at Hallmark Cards, Rob Leuschke now has
his own thriving design businesses, Alphabytes (www.alphabytes.com)
and the new Typesetit (www.typesetit.com). Growing up in St Charles,
Missouri, where he still lives, Rob showed great artistic promise
at an early age. He earned a BFA in graphic design at the University
of Missouri at Columbia. After graduation, his stint at Hallmark
Cards gave him the opportunity to learn from and work with some
of the best lettering artists in the industry.
Rob struck out on his own in 1987 and now boasts a long list of
clients from all over the world. Rob has created over 250 custom
typefaces, and his work has been exhibited in New York. Ambiance
BT is Rob's first typeface published by Bitstream, with more to
follow.
Australian typographer Harry Pears continues to explore ancient
type forms while maintaining his consultancy business Typeface Research
Pty. Ltd., of Lake Cathie, Australia. Born in Quirindi, Australia,
Harry has had a long career in printing and graphic arts and has
been the guiding force behind the creation of the Lindisfarne Nova
family. Lindisfarne Nova Incised and Lindisfarne Runes are wonderful
illustrative companions to the Lindisfarne Nova text fonts.
In a unique partnership, Harry develops the concepts, and calligrapher
Margaret Layson brings the designs to life. They both then work
on the digital incarnation in a true collaboration. Originally from
the U.K., Margaret began her professional career as a geophysicist.
After arriving in Australia in 1968, she began to work as a freelance
calligrapher. Over the years she has maintained an interest in the
history of writing, particularly the scripts and decorations in
manuscripts.
About
The New Font Collection
Bitstream announced the New Font Collection
(NFC) program in August of 2000. The current Bitstream Typeface
Library has been a mainstay of the graphic design community for
20 years. Bitstream felt the time had come to begin a new collection
of typefaces, not only to add fonts to the library but, more importantly,
to seek out designs from both new and established designers. To
pursue those goals, Bitstream established the New Font Collection
program.
