Bitstream Releases
Font Fusion 3.0, the Leading Font Rendering Solution for Small Embedded
Systems Major release provides new
support for font compression of all font formats
CAMBRIDGE, MA — June 6, 2005 — Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ:
BITS) announced today the release of Font
Fusion® 3.0, the company’s smallest, most advanced font
rasterizing engine, and the fastest font engine on the market today.
Font Fusion now includes built-in support for font compression,
allowing Bitstream’s premier font engine to read and render
industry-standard fonts, bitmap fonts, and outline fonts in compressed
format.
Bitstream can achieve over 2-to-1 compression from the original
to compressed size of a font, depending on the font format, the
complexity of the typeface design, the number of characters in the
font, and the compression level chosen. For example:
- 37,000-character font under 1 MB: Bitstream’s
unified stroke-based CJK font, which includes over 37,000 Traditional
Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese (Kanji), and Korean characters,
is under 1 MB with optimum compression
- 340-character font under 35 KB: the Tiresias
Screenfont achieves over 2-to-1 compression. In TrueType format,
it can be compressed down to 34 KB. In PFR (portable font resource)
format, it can be compressed down to 14 KB.
Developers can choose the font compression level for optimal trade-offs
between RAM/ROM savings and performance.
“With the strides we have made in font compression, random
access decompression, and LCD output, our customers will be able
to use high-quality fonts in small devices and embedded systems.
Note that this is ‘lossless’ compression, which means
there is no degradation in quality of the character output. The
integrity of the characters is maintained, and every character is
rendered 100% accurately,” stated Sampo Kaasila, Vice-President
of Research and Development for Bitstream. “Developers can
choose the compression level based on their device characteristics.
This will enable our partners to integrate fonts into small devices,
bringing a high-quality font solution to their customers.”
The following features were added for the Font Fusion 3.0 release:
- Support for lossless font compression of any
format Font Fusion is capable of rendering
- Random access decompression of any compressed
font
- Improved LCD display output
- Improved support for multi-bit per pixel bitmaps
- Integration upgrades and improvements for the
Bitstream PanoramaTM global text composition engine
“We are very pleased to announce the completion of Font Fusion
3.0. This release provides new support for font compression, critical
for developers building small embedded systems such as consumer
electronics devices and mobile phones,” said Anna Chagnon,
President and CEO of Bitstream. “Font Fusion is a small, fast,
and portable font rendering engine. It works well in environments
where memory and performance are issues. With this release of Font
Fusion, we have solidified our position as the leading font rendering
technology for embedded systems.”
About
Font Fusion
Font Fusion
is Bitstream’s premier font subsystem, rendering high-quality
characters in any format, at any resolution, on any platform or
device. Delivering exceptional text rendering for consumer electronics
devices and mobile phones, Font Fusion is the ideal solution for
small embedded systems.
Font Fusion is both small and fast. Developers can compile the
source code in 36 KB on up, depending on options. It generates more
than 37,000 characters per second on a 450MHz Pentium II processor,
rendering a TrueType font at 25 lines per em.
Font Fusion is designed for consumer electronics devices, mobile
phones, PDAs, set-top boxes, digital TVs, printers, graphics applications,
and embedded systems.
Available as an SDK (Software Developers’ Kit), Font Fusion
renders a wide variety of industry-standard and compact font formats:
OpenType, TrueType, Type 1, CFF/Type2, T2K® Latin, T2K Asian,
TrueDoc® PFR (portable font resource), Bitstream Speedo®,
and Font Fusion stroke (FFS) format, as well as embedded bitmaps.
Developers can also license a number of different suites of fonts,
including delta-hinted screen fonts, stroke-based Asian fonts, the
Tiresias Screenfont, the CCTV Font Set, and the TV Font Pack.
