PFRs are compatible with the TrueDoc CSP font processor found in the TrueDoc Imaging System. Resident font sets are available for PCL 5, 5e, and 6 emulations as well as for PostScript. Aside from Latin fonts, Bitstream also offers Kanji font sets to emulate popular Japanese and Chinese resident font sets. Custom resident font sets can be configured on request to fulfill non-standard and other international requirements.

Bitstream resident font sets are fully compatible with the fonts found in today's printers. Each resident font set contains all the glyphs needed to support all the character sets (or symbol sets) for a particular printer emulation. The resident font sets also include all the necessary font metric data, including positioning data and set widths.

Resident font PFRs are provided in two forms: Standard and compact PFR. Compact PFRs are smaller than standard PFRs but compromise performance slightly (10-20%) when compared to the standard form. Developers can choose the appropriate PFR form based on a product's ROM and CPU configuration.

Bitstream uses a manufacturing tool based on the TrueDoc Character Shape Recorder (CSR) to create PFR resident font sets. In the manufacturing process, the CSR takes fonts in any outline font format, records the character shapes, compacts the data, and stores the recorded shapes as a PFR. Bitstream offers an automated version of its manufacturing tool to its OEM clients. The TrueDoc PFR Manufacturing System can enable a printer developer to quickly and easily build their own PFR resident font sets to customize or localize printers for specific markets.
