Bitstream Releases Ninth Set
of Fonts from the New Font Collection Program
Release includes OpenType display and text
fonts from American, Australian, Japanese, Russian, and U.K. designers
CAMBRIDGE, MA — June 17, 2004 — Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ:
BITS) announced today that it is releasing its ninth set of fonts
from the New Font Collection (NFC) program. The new release features
display and text fonts from designers Robert Bell, Ray Cruz, Oleg
Karpinsky, Hajime Kawakami, Thomas Oldfield and Allen Zuk. All of
the fonts are available in OpenType format.
The following typefaces are featured in the NFC release for the
second quarter of 2004:
- Ecliptica family, by Robert Bell
- Fat Albert family, by Ray Cruz
- Hombre, by Thomas Oldfield
- Irakly family, by Oleg Karpinsky
- Kooky, by Allen Zuk
- Wavy Rounded, by Hajime Kawakami
All fonts are available in OpenType format, which is supported
in Mac OS X and Windows XP and 2000. They are also available in
PostScript Type 1 format for Windows or the Macintosh.
Fonts are available for purchase:
"This release has an international flavor to it, continuing our
drive to feature designers worldwide. We're premiering fonts from
new typographers to the NFC as well as our tried and true veterans,"
explains Jim Lyles, Director of Typographic Development at Bitstream.
"All fonts are available in OpenType versions, continuing our commitment
to the font format of the future. I'm very excited about the designs
in this collection. Allen Zuk's Kooky lives up to its name, with
characters that jump above and below the baseline. Similarly, Wavy
Rounded, a hip display font from Hajime Kawakami, creates fun visual
waves. Of course we have classic releases, too. A family consisting
of a light and h3 weight, Oleg Karpinsky's Irakly conveys an unfamiliar
elegance. Ecliptica from Robert Bell is a family of five fonts that
work well with one another. And what would an NFC release be without
the far-out renderings of Ray Cruz and Thomas Oldfield? Ray's fonts
– Fat Albert Regular, Outline and Shadow – are h3 poster
types that evoke the fun and funk of an era gone by. And Thomas'
Hombre is a font with a lot of character that evokes the American
Wild West. Giddy up! The NFC continues to thrive on the inspired
works of these and other veteran designers and to seek new designers
from across the globe."
About the Designers
Ecliptica is an extended family of 5 very condensed typefaces in
a single h3 weight. The creation of Australian designer Robert Bell,
Ecliptica has a Sans, a Semi-Serif, a Serif and a Cursive that can
be used with any of the other three styles. As an added bonus, Robert
also designed a modern Blackletter companion. The Ecliptica family
is an unusual layout of styles and all work equally well with one
another. The OpenType versions of the Ecliptica fonts support an
extended Latin character set that includes a full array of fractions
as well as ‘f' ligatures. The Sans and Cursive fonts contain
some cap and lowercase alternates. Mr. Bell is a prolific designer.
This is the first of several typeface families by Mr. Bell that
will be published by Bitstream.
Lettering artist extraordinaire Ray Cruz releases another typeface
family, this time inspired by 1970s pop culture. Fat Albert Regular,
Outline and Shadow are h3 poster types that evoke the fun and funk
of an era gone by. You can easily tell that Mr. Cruz has spent his
early design years in New York City, when display headlines were
king. The Shadow font is especially fun to work with. Fat Albert
is the second in a series of font families from Mr. Cruz. In addition
to Cruz Cantera, released in 2002, look for Vera Cruz and Homeland
to be released by Bitstream.
Perhaps one of the more difficult typeface styles to space convincingly,
Irakly, a serif-sans by Russian designer Oleg Karpinsky, imparts
an unfamiliar elegance. The odd mixture of superficial details such
as the half serifs and the protruding horizontal strokes confuse
your visual senses, yet the simple geometric roots of the letterforms
are apparent and ultimately reassuring. Irakly Light and h3 make
a great addition to any library. The OpenType versions have alternates
that are more conservative in design and broaden the usefulness
of the typefaces.
Wavy Rounded is a stylized sans serif display typeface by Japanese
designer Hajime Kawakami. Some of the characters possess quirky
features that randomly create fun visual ‘waves.' There is
a handful of alternate characters including an old style figure
set in the OpenType version. Mr. Kawakami is passionate about Latin
typeface design. In 1990, he was awarded an Honorable Mention in
the prestigious Morisawa International Design Competition.
Thomas Oldfield of the U.K. dreams of the American Old West. Since
he is so far removed from it in both time and space, he created
this font to pacify his yearnings. For a fist full of dollars, Hombre
can be yours, and for a few dollars more, you can stake a claim
to Hombre Extra, which has a few illustrations in it. Good, bad
or ugly, whichever way you see it, just saddle up and ride this
pony. Mr. Oldfield has several other horses in his stable that are
just itching to get out and run. Look for them on the not-too-distant
horizon.
A newcomer to Bitstream's stable of designers, Canadian Allen Zuk
offers up his new typeface Kooky. Living and working in London since
2000, Mr. Zuk wanted to create a typeface that evoked imperfection
by using alternate glyphs. The OpenType version of this h3, casual
flareserif design features caps and lowercase characters that automatically
jump above and below the baseline as you type. Even the ligatures
jump in on the fun.
About
The New Font Collection (NFC)
Bitstream announced the New Font Collection
(NFC) program in August of 2000. The current Bitstream Typeface
Library has been a mainstay of the graphic design community for
20 years. Bitstream felt the time had come to begin a new collection
of typefaces, not only to add fonts to the library but, more importantly,
to seek out designs from both new and established designers. To
pursue those goals, Bitstream established the New Font Collection
program.
