Bitstream Integrates Font Fusion with Symbian OS
Leading font rendering solution for small embedded systems now working on leading operating system for data-enabled mobile phones
CAMBRIDGE, MA — August 1, 2005 — Bitstream Inc. (NASDAQ:
BITS) announced today that it has integrated
Font Fusion® 3.0, the company’s smallest, most advanced
font rasterizing engine, and the fastest font engine on the market
today, with
Symbian OS. Symbian develops and licenses Symbian OS, the
operating system that powers today’s most popular smartphones.
Font Fusion is engineered for small embedded systems. The source
code can be compiled in as little as 36 KB. Using Font Fusion, 100
MIPS CPUs can render between 2,400 to 3,300 characters per second.
A premier font subsystem, Bitstream’s Font Fusion renders
high-quality characters in any format, at any resolution, on any
platform or device. Font Fusion supports all international languages.
In addition to bitmaps, Font Fusion can render scalable outline
and stroke-based characters.
“Symbian OS is the leading development platform for data-enabled
mobile phones and smartphones worldwide. Now hardware manufacturers
and software developers can expand their font technology solutions
and provide their customers with high-quality, scalable text,”
said Anna Chagnon, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bitstream
Inc. “Scalable font rendering adds significant value to mobile
and smart phones. Font Fusion, our premier font rendering engine,
delivers outstanding scalable technology in a very small footprint.
Bitstream’s Font Fusion will play a key role in delivering
high-quality text display on smartphones. We are pleased to be working
with Symbian in this high-growth market segment.”
About
Font Fusion
Font Fusion is Bitstream’s premier font subsystem, rendering
high-quality characters in any format, at any resolution, on any
platform or device. Delivering exceptional text rendering for consumer
electronics devices and mobile phones, Font Fusion is the ideal
solution for small embedded systems.
Font Fusion is both small and fast. Developers can compile the
source code in 36 KB on up, depending on options. It generates more
than 37,000 characters per second on a 450MHz Pentium II processor,
rendering a TrueType font at 25 lines per em.
Font Fusion is designed for consumer electronics devices, mobile
phones, PDAs, set-top boxes, digital TVs, printers, graphics applications,
and embedded systems.
Available as an SDK (Software Developers’ Kit), Font Fusion
renders a wide variety of industry-standard and compact font formats:
OpenType, TrueType, Type 1, CFF/Type2, T2K® Latin, T2K Asian,
TrueDoc® PFR (portable font resource), Bitstream Speedo®,
and Font Fusion stroke (FFS) format, as well as embedded bitmaps.
Developers can also license a number of different suites of fonts,
