Font Installation Errors with
Font Navigator
Problem
When I try to install a font with Font Navigator, I get this message:
- Unable to install this font
- or-
- Cannot Install This Font
Solution
There are several possible reasons for this message.
- Some applications access font files directly. If this type of
application has a font file open, you see this message when Font
Navigator tries to access the font. Many graphic applications
handle font files directly, not through a font manager like Font
Navigator. Close any open applications. If the problem continues,
re-start Windows.
- You may have installed over 400 fonts on your system. Windows
95 and 98 limit how many fonts you can have installed at one time.
If you have over 400 installed fonts: Uninstall those fonts
you do not often use, then try re-installing fonts. In the future,
use Font Navigator's Group options to place your fonts into
groups for quick install and uninstall.
- The font file resides on a network drive that is no longer accessible.
Restore network drives.
- The font file has been moved or deleted from outside of Font
Navigator.
Use the Properties dialog box for the font to see where Font
Navigator thinks the font file should be. Then, use the Windows
Find utility to find the file. Once you find the font file,
either move it to the correct location, or use the Find Fonts
command in Font Navigator to re-locate the font for the Font
Catalog.
- The Font Navigator database may be corrupted. Font Navigator
cannot follow the path to the font file. Rebuild the Font Catalog.
- The font file has become corrupted.
Use the Font Navigator Properties sheet to find the font file.
Use Windows Explorer to go to the font file and double click on
it. If the font does not open in the Windows 95 Font View (TrueType)
or the ATM Preview (PostScript), then the font file is corrupt.
Reinstall the font using the original font disk or file supplied
by the manufacturer.
