PostScript Type 1 Fonts and Font Navigator

Problem

  • Font Navigator does not recognize my PostScript Type 1 fonts.
  • I get a message that I need ATM after Font Navigator searches my drives for fonts.

Solution

  1. For Windows 95/98, and for Windows NT 4.0 on machines with Intel chips, Adobe Type Manager (ATM) is needed by Windows to provide screen display and non-PostScript printing of PostScript fonts. We recommend ATM or ATM Deluxe, version 4.0 or later.

If ATM is not installed, or is not active (on), then Font Navigator ignores PostScript fonts. It does not display them in any lists, and it does not find them with the Find Fonts command.

To check that ATM is on, start ATM. It is an application, and usually it appears in a program group on the Start menu. On the main ATM window, or on the Settings tab, there is an option to turn the ATM system on or off.

If you use only TrueType fonts, you do not need ATM.

  2. To allow Font Navigator to manage PostScript fonts, do not select the Show TrueType only option on the settings for the Windows Fonts folder. This option is on the TrueType tab on the Options dialog box for the Windows Fonts folder. Do not select this option if you want PostScript Type 1 fonts to appear in Font Navigator with ATM installed and active.

  3. Font Navigator requires both the .PFM and .PFB files for PostScript fonts. If your PostScript fonts come with .PFB, .INF, and .AFM files, but no .PFM, you can use ATM to install the fonts, then use Font Navigator to manage the fonts. ATM creates PFMs from .INF and .AFM files.
